food & health
With so much convenience and fast food about, we don't eat as well as we used to. If we carry on like this, nine out of ten of our kids risk growing up to have dangerous amounts of fat in their bodies. This can cause life-threatening diseases like cancer, type 2 diabetes and heart disease - so it's really important we do something about it.
There are a range of projects available in Portsmouth to help you and your family to enjoy a healthy, active lifestyle, which helps to achieve and maintain a healthy weight. Here's some of the things we've done so far:
- Our workshop and cookery sessions have helped over 300 people being healthier eating with the team visiting community centres, schools, play schemes and voluntary orgnaisations.
- We are continuing to run out successful open access programme for teenagers, in partnership with School Nurses. The aim is to give 14 to 18 year olds the skills and knowledge to become a healthy weight and offers a range of free advice and support.
- Isambard Brunel Junior school now has a funky fruit dining room thanks to the edible images project, two more successful launches have recently taken place at Craneswater Junior School and Highbury Primary School. Next on the list are Medina Primary School and Westover Primary School.
Free advice, practical support, training and resources are available from the Food & Health team for people of all ages in the city.
It is easier than ever before to make the small changes that will make a big difference.
